Planning

  • Choosing a specialised Accessible Travel Agency can save you time and energy when planning a holiday.
  • World Accessible Holidays can offer accessible holidays at high street prices, with accessible accommodation, equipment, and transportation

Research

  • How accessible is the hotel and its surroundings? (Use Google Street View to walk the route around the hotel and identify any potential obstacles)
  • Not all destinations are equal, that’s why it’s essential to research destinations to find the most accessible places which meet your needs
  • Read reviews from other travellers with similar access requirements to find out more (we recommend using Trustpilot and Snowball)

Hotels and Accommodation

  • Make sure the accommodation has rooms with apropriate accessibility features which meet your needs, such as roll-in showers, ramps, and wide doorways. World Accessible Holidays can do this for you!
  • Use our holiday filters to easily sort accommodation properties according to your needs, filtering based on accessibility features
  • If you need equipment (hoists, shower chairs, etc), ask if the accommodation can provide this. We are experienced in sourcing all sorts of equipment and will be able to help you with any equipment needs, ensuring your holiday runs smoothly, regardless of your access needs

Transport

  • When booking flights, check with the airline about their assistance policies regarding boarding with mobility aids, and inform them of any equipment you will be bringing, such as wheelchairs. World Accessible Holidays can do this for you, as well as booking airport assisstance if required!
  • Ensure the airport transfer to your hotel is accessible, this needs to be requested with the operator. They may want to charge you, but under the Equality Act (2010), if transfers are included for others they must make reasonable adjustments. This is why it is beneficial to have an experienced agency, such as World Accessible Holidays, to deal with any issues for you
  • Research the accessibility of any public transport at your destination, not all places are the same and in some places public transport and taxis may be limited in terms of accessibility, necessitating private transport. We recommend using the Citymapper app with its step-free travel option to explore accessible ways to access public transport

Documents and Insurance

  • Make a checklist! Ensure you have all the necessary documents, your passport is up to date, and you have any documentation for medical supplies (including medical certificates if needed) and mobility aids
  • Arrive at the airport early to ensure enough time for extra assistance required when going through passport control
  • Make sure you have any confirmations with you for any accessible elements of your holiday
  • Buy insurance from the time of booking, as if you are unable to travel and don’t have insurance, you may not be able to get a refund. See our travel insurance page for more info!
