Crete

Crete, affectionately known as the island of the gods, is the largest of the Greek islands and is a must-visit Mediterranean destination. Visitors flock here to embrace the rich history, inviting culture and diverse landscapes that dot the region. It’s also a great holiday for those of us with accessibility in mind, as Crete offers a wealth of activities and experiences that cater to everyone.

Although large parts of Crete are accessible to all, there are certain areas that are less suited. Heraklion, although quite popular, is quite behind with wheelchair accessibility which can make getting around difficult. Opt for places like Rethymnon, particularly the old town, as this is flat and allows for easy access to the beach.

Buses in Crete are also a little behind on the times, which can make getting around tough if you’re a wheelchair user or have mobility concerns. It’s advisable to check ahead of time about potential transport options, such as mobility taxis or coaches.
